According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their resource article “Leaks Can Run, but They Can’t Hide,” household water leaks waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water per home each year. Even more alarming, 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90+ gallons a day. Fortunately, many of these issues—like faulty toilet flappers and dripping faucets—are simple to fix with basic tools and minimal effort.
The EPA encourages homeowners to be proactive about leak detection, especially during colder months when water usage should be lower. A family of four using over 12,000 gallons a month likely has a serious leak. Another simple test? Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period of no usage—any movement indicates a leak.
